Quick Facts

  • The weather in Portugal is similar to the weather in South Carolina (dry summers, mild winters)

  • Wear comfortable sneakers. The cities are hilly, and the sidewalks are cobblestone

  • Dress for comfort. You are not at a fashion show.

  • Bring a sweater or light jacket for cool evenings

  • Stores and shops are closed on Sundays and Saturdays after 12 noon.

  • I travel with ice cube trays because I love extra ice in my drinks

  • Purchase a SIM card at Vodafone at the airport for your cell phone. It's super cheap.

  • If you forget anything, you can buy it

  • You can find detailed travel itineraries for Portugal ranging from 7 to 14 days that cover popular regions such as Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve. https://www.facebook.com/groups/292014147888013

Portugal Travel Tips: Packing list for Portugal, Portugal Trip Essentials

What to pack for a trip to Portugal

Portugal is warm and sunny. The farther south you travel, the warmer the climate. The area below Lisbon is flatter and contains some mountains. Beaches surround the coastline of Portugal. As you travel north, more and more terrain is mountainous. The climate is unique. If you are in the sun, it's warm and hot. If you shelter yourself from the sun, it's more comfortable. The mountain towns can be cool as the night appears. It's best to carry a sweater for chilly evenings. Most of Portugal does not use air conditioning.

FYI, My opinion of Visiting Portugal

The Portuguese people are not worried about fashion or how you are dressed on your trip. Dress comfortably and with respect. When visiting a church, it's common but not required to cover your shoulders and knees. Wear what makes you happy. Most Portuguese men wear long pants or jeans with a button-down shirt. Women wear pants, skirts, or a dress. I prefer to dress in layers because I am warm in the sun and cool in the shade. The evenings are cool. Don't try to be a local; your appearance will make you stand out. Your eyewear, shoes, cell phone, and attire will make you appear to be a tourist. It's okay. Enjoy Portugal. Most sidewalks are cobblestone and are slippery. Outside of Lisbon, most Portuguese people wear dark colors or patterns on their clothes. No one is judging you for your choice of clothing.

Trust me, you will overpack. If you forget something, you can buy it in Portugal. Do not bring anything over the top unless you plan to go to a 5-star restaurant or a wedding. Anything that gets wrinkled easily should be left at home. I leave my jewelry at home and keep it simple.

Clothing Essentials Packing List

Packing for Portugal requires considering your planned activities. Here are key clothing essentials:

  • Lightweight Clothing: Choose breathable fabrics like cotton and linen, perfect for warm summer days. For example, pack a mix of t-shirts and dresses that can keep you comfortable while exploring.

  • Comfortable Footwear: The charming streets can be cobbled and hilly, so bring well-cushioned walking shoes or sandals for a comfortable experience. Many tourists recommend brands like Merrell or Teva for durability and comfort.

  • Layers: Even on summer evenings, the air can be cool, especially near the coast. A light sweater or jacket is advisable for enjoying coastal sunsets.

  • Swimwear: If beach time is on your itinerary, include a swimsuit, beach towel, and flip-flops for relaxation on the sandy shores. Sunscreen, sun hat, beach towel

  • Rain Gear: If traveling in winter, a compact umbrella or waterproof jacket can save you from unexpected downpours. About 87% of winter rain falls from October to March

  • Think about what you want to do in Portugal and what time of the year you are traveling.
