It has something for everyone: beaches, mountains, waves, sea adventures, vineyards, eucalyptus forests, cork trees, cobblestone streets, festas in the streets, 100-foot waves, hand-carved boats, historic castles, traditional food, old churches, and more.

I live in America and travel to Portugal several times per year for weeks and months. We travel the new roads, the old roads, and the back roads. I document and photograph our travels. I make suggestions on where to stay, where to eat, and what to do in places in and around Portugal.
What is Portugal known for?
Portugal is known for its Atlantic coastline, the Algarve, Lisbon and Porto, fado music, port wine, and its historical role in the Age of Discovery. The vast number of castles, Palaces, and royal homes in Portugal is noteworthy. Lots of buildings in Portugal are older than America. It offers amazing handmade goods to bring back home for gifts. The food in Portugal is seasoned and fresh.
Is Portugal expensive to visit?
Portugal is among the more affordable destinations in Western Europe, generally cheaper than Spain and significantly cheaper than France, Germany, or the UK. There are 3 types of tax on products in the stores. The highest tax of 23 % is on non-essential items. Food and essentials are taxed at a low. Eating out and food shopping are affordable in Portugal for visitors. Clothing, canned fish, and shoes are affordable in Portugal. Automobiles, housing, and electronics are expensive in Portugal.
What language do they speak in Portugal?
Portuguese is the official language. English proficiency is high, particularly in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve. Most Portuguese citizens under the age of 30 can speak English.
Lots of Portuguese speak Spanish, French, and Italian.
Is Portugal safe to travel to?
Portugal is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world. According to the Global Peace Index GPI, Portugal is the 7th safest country in the world
Do I need a visa to visit Portugal?
It depends on your nationality. EU/EEA citizens can enter freely. Many non-EU visitors can enter visa-free for short stays up to 90 days under the Schengen rules.

How do you obtain a Global Blue Card?
I applied online, paid the fee ($100), and completed the TSA in-person interview when I landed in the Philly airport. My AA credit card covered the cost of the application.
Which website do you use to apply?
Do I need an appointment to complete the application?
I didn’t need an appointment because the calendar was backed up for one year, so they waived the requirement to have an appointment. You can complete the interview at specific international airports in the US. The interview took about 15 minutes. I needed my NJ driver’s license and current passport. I was electronically fingerprinted. I answered a few questions.
How do you know if you are approved?
Two weeks later, I received an email that I was approved. I should receive my Global Entry card in the mail shortly. The card is valid for 5 years.
How do you use the card?
When you enter the US or fly domestically, you go to a Global Entry kiosk and scan yourself in. You don’t have to wait in line for TSA or passport checks.
It fast-tracks you in a few minutes.
I am so excited. I have waited for hours in the TSA and passport lines over the past 36 years of traveling.
Do I still need TSA Pre-Check?
The agent also told me that I don’t need a TSA Pre-Check. Global Entry gives you a precheck.
Who can apply for Global Entry?
Global Entry is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. legal permanent residents as well as citizens of certain countries with which CBP has trusted traveler arrangements, including Argentina, Colombia, Germany, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Panama, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Canadian citizens and residents enrolled in NEXUS may also use the Global Entry kiosks.
