Why were the Gardens built in Portugal?

The gardens are fairly new. In 2001, a wealthy Portuguese investor. José Berardo was shocked by the Taliban government’s destruction of the Giant Buddhas in Afghanistan. This inspired him to recreate a tribute and place for peaceful relaxation in Portugal. Berardo initiated the Buddha Eden in homage to the cultural and spiritual monuments. Six tons of marble Buddhas and figures were installed throughout the garden. Walkways, piers, and gazebos provide access to areas for pondering or meditating. An additional display is a cobalt blue, unique copy of the “terracotta army” buried in China some 2,200 years ago.

The non-profit Berardo Foundation manages the Buddha facility with the mission to create a space for all people regardless of religious affiliation, ethnicity, national origin, sex, age, or social standing. This peaceful place is needed more now than ever.

Oriental Garden

The oriental inspired garden was designed to realize a sense of peace, harmony, and serenity within nature. Lakes, trees, pagodas, and sculptures become one with the land.

What is the history of the Buddha Garden?

It is intended from the Buddha Eden Garden to be a place of reconciliation.

Without any religious tendency, it opens doors to all people regardless of religion, ethnicity, nationality, sex, age, cultural or social condition, inviting communication and meditation as a way to rediscover happiness. The aim, therefore, is to go against

the destruction of the human being and to spread the culture of peace.
